Low Loader vs Tilt Tray: Which Trailer Do You Need in Brisbane?
Two of the most common trailers in heavy haulage — but they do very different jobs. Here's how to choose the right one for your Brisbane transport job.
The Basics
What Is a Low Loader?
A low loader is a drop-deck trailer with a low-clearance deck that sits close to the ground. The low deck angle makes it ideal for loading tall machinery — excavators, bulldozers, cranes and oversize plant — that would be too tall to load onto a standard-height trailer.
Low loaders are rated for heavy loads and come in various configurations, including extendable and multi-axle versions for the heaviest and longest loads.
The Basics
What Is a Tilt Tray?
A tilt tray is a truck with a hydraulic tilting deck that lowers to ground level for winch-on loading. Unlike a low loader, a tilt tray doesn't need a loading ramp — the entire deck tilts so the load can be winched or dragged directly onto the tray from ground level.
Tilt trays are ideal for loads that can't be driven on — shipping containers, site sheds, palletised equipment and stationary machinery — and for sites with tight access where a low loader won't fit.
Comparison
Low Loader vs Tilt Tray Comparison
| Feature | Low Loader | Tilt Tray |
|---|---|---|

| Weight capacity | Up to 250+ tonnes (multi-axle) | Up to 25 tonnes |
| Loading method | Driven or winched on via ramps | Winched on via tilting deck |
| Ideal for | Excavators, dozers, cranes, oversize plant | Containers, site sheds, generators, skids |
| Clearance angle | Low — for tall machinery | Ground-level — for winch-on loading |
| Max load height | Tall loads (low deck clearance) | Standard height loads |
| Typical use | Mining, construction, earthmoving | Containers, portable buildings, site equipment |
When to Use
When to Choose a Low Loader in Brisbane
Choose a low loader when your load is:
- Tall machinery — excavators, bulldozers, cranes and graders that need a low deck angle to load safely.
- Heavy equipment — loads over 25 tonnes that need multi-axle load-spreading.
- Oversize loads — wide or long machinery that requires permits and pilot vehicles.
- Mining and construction machinery — the standard choice for earthmoving and mining plant.
When to Use
When to Choose a Tilt Tray in Brisbane
Choose a tilt tray when your load is:
- Shipping containers — 20ft and 40ft containers that need ground-level delivery.
- Site sheds and dongas — portable buildings that can be winched onto the tray.
- Equipment on skids or pallets — loads that can be winched on rather than driven.
- Loads that can be winched on — stationary machinery, generators and compressors.
- Tighter access sites — industrial yards and workshops where a low loader won't fit.
